A man who killed his grandmother by stabbing her more than 20 times will be locked up in hospital indefinitely.
Somtera Bibi was killed by Subell Ali, 34, at the family’s home in Manor Park on April 2, 2022.
Police were called at 9.56pm to the property in Landseer Avenue and upon arrival, found the 80-year-old grandmother, who had dementia, dead.
The attack happened just two days after Ali, who has a serious mental illness, was released from a psychiatric hospital.
Jurors were told that Ali was unfit to stand trial as a result of his mental illness so they would only decide on the facts of the case.
Yesterday (March 30), Judge Philip Katz KC ordered Ali to be detained at Three Bridges Medium Secure Unit.

On the morning of the attack, jurors were told that Ali’s mother, Fatima Khatun, heard a “terrible scream”. When she went downstairs, she found Somtera in the sitting room.
Jurors were told that Ali then left a large blood-stained knife in the kitchen before walking out of the house.
He was found at a bus stop in Dersingham Avenue by police around ten minutes later, with his sleeves covered in his grandmother’s blood.
Prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC told jurors that after Ali was allowed home from hospital on March 31, he was preoccupied by someone he called Shahin Jahan.
Mr Emlyn Jones said one of the symptoms of Ali’s mental illness was that he would hear voices and appeared to be acting under the belief Shahin Jahan was giving him orders.
After police arrived at the scene, the defendant’s mother said he had told her Shahin Jahan “asked him to go and kill [her] quickly”.
While at Forest Gate police station, the defendant told police: “Someone told me to do this. Why would I do that to my own nan?”
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Whellams, said: "Our thoughts today are with the family and friends of Somtera, who they lost in such terrible circumstances.
"I would like to thank my team for their hard work and diligence in what has been a complex and harrowing investigation."
