The mum of a baby abandoned in a shopping bag in East Ham is yet to be identified, a court was told.

Baby Elsa was found by a dog walker at 9.15pm on January 18 wrapped in a towel inside a shopping bag at the junction of Greenway and High Street South. 

Her story made the headlines when the Met Office confirmed temperatures that night had dropped to as low as -4 degrees celsius, inspiring hospital staff to give her the name Elsa after the character in the film Frozen.

The East London Family Court heard today (April 16) that the infant's mum has not come forward and efforts to identify her are ongoing. 

Kate Claxton, a representative for Newham Council, told the court: “The police currently have no leads.”

The council representative also advised that the Met's ongoing investigation means that Elsa's birth cannot be registered. 

This in turn means that no final decision about the future of her care can be made.

Police believe Elsa was less than an hour old when she was found by strangers. 

The force shared their concerns for the woman's wellbeing after a woman was seen entering Greenway that night at 8.45pm via the High Street South entrance. 

Judge Carol Atkinson adjourned the case until May 17.
