Leyton Orient head coach Richie Wellens called their League One opener at Charlton Athletic a 'brilliant day for the club' despite ending in defeat.
George Dobson netted the only goal of the game at The Valley just before half-time, when Corey Blackett-Taylor found space to cross.
But O's did not look out of place in their first match back in the third tier, following promotion last season, and Wellens told the club website: "Take away the actual 1-0, the result, and I think it's been a brilliant day for the club.
"Our supporters were tremendous, the numbers and the noise they made was tremendous, and the performance apart from one moment's lapse in the 44th minute when we've got a chance to play it down the side, for Theo to run to, we play a straight pass to feet, it gets interrupted, and then [Corey] Blackett-Taylor is a threat in the final third.
"But apart from that, we've got Joe Pigott in who is not fit, Ruel [Sotiriou] was touch and go and then we've got a couple of other injuries, Jordan Graham is not quite ready to go, so we didn't press in our usual way, but I thought tactically we were very, very good.
"We left their five [Lucas Ness] on the ball, we were happy to leave him on the ball, but then just the moments. The amount of counter-attacks we had in the first half, we've just got to be better, the last little pass, the last finish."
O's had chances of their own to get back on terms in the second half and Wellens was encouraged by how his side improved on the day.
"They've got a massive budget, you obviously see the size of the club, and they're expected to be in the top four or five, so I don't think there's nothing to be scared of," he added.
"I thought second half we controlled it all more or less. I want them to be more confident and believe in themselves more, because I thought once we got playing out from the back second half, with more belief, I thought we caused them a lot of problems."
Vastley experienced midfielder Darren Pratley echoed those sentiments, having played for 79 minutes before making way for Ethan Galbraith.
"Disappointing result, obviously read in the paper, we lose 1-0, but a lot of positives to come," said the 38-year-old.
"Very proud to play for this club, very proud to come here to a club that has been in the Premier League not too long ago, a club that aspires to get promoted this year.
"And to put a performance on like we did, to have that end sold out, some times being louder than the home fans, was great. A lot of positives to take.
"We're going to get setbacks throughout the season, it's important that we analyse it and move on again."
