Canning Town FC celebrates its 75th anniversary this season and is holding its annual Tubby Trophy match on Sunday (August 13, 11am).

Town's vets will take on JK Silvertown Vets at Barking Abbey Sports Ground, South Park Drive, Barking, IG11 8UF with a lot of past players playing and attending.

Eight of the players are from the Town squad which won the London and Essex Cup titles in the same season, namely Gary Cook, Lee Walsh, Geoff Watts, Stefan Fry, Reece Fedden, Darren Boland, Micky Boland and Mark Hawkins

Paul Mooney said: "The main thing is we are celebrating providing football in the community since 1948 and raising money for Haven Hospices who provided end of life care for one of our players - Shaun (Bugsy) Maloney - who we sadly lost to Cancer a few years ago."

Leyton Orient's director of football Martin Ling will be at the game to present the Tubby Trophy to the winner.

The event raised over £2500 for charity Havens Hospices last season with most of the contributions collected on the day of the game.

Canning Town was formed in 1948 and the first team currently plays in the Essex Olympian League Premier Division under manager Lee Wilson.

They start their 2023-24 campaign with a trip to Catholic United on Saturday.

Having previously played home matches at Plaistow's Southern Road Playing Fields, East Ham's Gooesley Playing Fields and the Terence McMillan Stadium, they now use the West Ham United Foundation ground in Beckton.

The club made it to the first round proper of the FA Vase in 2016-17, after upsetting Essex Senior League side Southend Manor in a penalty shoot-out for an historic win at Southchurch Park.

They were then beaten 5-4 by Biggleswade after extra time after a thrilling tie.

This is the third year of the club supporting the Havens Hospice charity. Donations can be made via JustGiving at https://justgiving.com/fundraising/canningtownvets.
